THE MOST DANGEROUS 8 SECONDS IN SPORTS
SPANISH ORIGINS
The origin of the rodeo can be traced back to the 16th century influence from Spanish conquistadors. What initially started out as daily practices of Spanish ranchers, evolved into ranch and horsemanship skill contests featured at charreadas.
GAINING POPULARITY
Charreada-style competition gained popularity in the Southwest and California. Competitions became more of an event and the Lone Star Fair became the first-ever Anglo-American event to host this style of bull fighting.
STANDARDIZATION
A group of cowboys decided to create the Cowboys’ Turtle Association after walking out of the Boston Garden Rodeo in a strike. They went on to established many of the qualifying rules, such as the 8 second ride.
BREAKING AWAY
20 bull riders gathered to contribute in the creation of the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. Believing that bull riding was popular enough to break away from the traditional rodeo, they created their own governing rules and event schedule.
